Infant and early childhood mental health addresses the social and emotional development of a child from birth to three years old. This is a critical period of development of empathy, which can have lifelong effects for building relationships and development of addictive or behavioral disorders that can lead to academic failure and involvment with law enforcement. Many children at risk during this critical developmental period become involved with the child welfare system and foster care.
