Law Enforcement
&
Mental Health Courts

Decreases in funding for mental health combined with a lack of access to care in lower income areas and among marginalized populations, has resulted in more people sufferring with serious mental illness and addictions coming into contact with law enforcement during mental health crises.

Some of the most dangerous sitautions police officers face involve emotionally dysregulated community members.

Helping law enforcement learn how to identify, asssess in real time, and de-escalate and divert people  to care who are having mental health crises or to identify and communicate and appropriately assess situations with people with disabilities like deafness can reduce injuries to officers and to community members and can lessen the burden on our courts and correctional services.

Additionally, when community members with mental health challenges and addictions engage in illegal behaviors that must end in arrests, specialized mental health courts, drug courts, Veteran's courts, and domestic violence courts, as well as specialized treatment-focused probation officers can provide a unique opportunity for mental health professionals and legal or corretional professionals to partner towards rehabilitation and improved community functioning for those arrested.
